Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Recommendations Update
On Friday, September 24th, 2021, the CDC announced their recommendation for a booster shot of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine in certain populations as well as a booster dose for those individuals in high-risk occupational and institutional settings.
The recommendation is for individuals who have been fully vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech (COMIRNATY) vaccine for six months or longer. This decision comes on the heels of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) September 22nd authorization of boosters for certain populations.
Who is now eligible for the Pfizer vaccine booster?
Individuals who are 65 years or older, 18 years or older with underlying medical conditions, or those who work in a high-risk setting, such as healthcare workers, teachers, and childcare providers, or food workers, are eligible in North Carolina.
According to CDC recommendations:
- people 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series,
- people aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series,
- people aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks, and
- people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.
Why should I get the third dose booster?
The Pfizer vaccine has been FDA approved and will help strengthen protection against severe illness and disease in individuals who are at high risk for exposure to the COVID-19 virus or the complications from severe disease. Severe illness means that an individual with COVID-19 may end up needing:
- Hospitalization
- Intensive Care
- Ventilator to assist with breathing
