How Does a Sliding Fee Program Work?
For many families, the cost of healthcare can be a real concern. You may need to see a doctor, refill a prescription, or get help managing an ongoing health condition, but worry about what the visit will cost. That concern shouldn’t keep you from asking about your options.
Community health centers offer a Sliding Fee Discount Program designed to help make healthcare more affordable for people who qualify. The name may sound complicated, but the basic idea is simple: what you pay may be adjusted based on your household income and family size.
What is a sliding fee discount?
A sliding fee discount reduces the amount an eligible patient is responsible for paying for certain healthcare services.
Instead of everyone paying the same amount, the health center uses information about your income and family size to determine whether you qualify for a discount and, if so, what level of discount applies.
The program follows guidelines established for federally qualified health centers by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
You don’t need to understand all of the federal rules to ask for help. Health center staff can explain the application process and what information is needed to determine whether you qualify.
Do I have to be uninsured to qualify?
No. This is one of the most common misunderstandings about sliding fee programs.
Eligibility is based on income and family size, not simply on whether you have health insurance. That means people with insurance may also qualify for a sliding fee discount.
This can be especially important for people who have insurance but still face high deductibles, copays, or other out-of-pocket expenses.
If you’re unsure whether you qualify, ask. Having insurance does not automatically mean you are ineligible.
How is eligibility determined?
Sliding fee discounts use the Federal Poverty Guidelines, which are updated regularly and take household income and family size into account.
In general, patients with lower household incomes receive larger discounts. As income increases, the amount of the discount may decrease.
You don’t have to calculate this yourself. When you apply, health center staff will review the information you provide and determine where your household falls within the current guidelines.
You may be asked to provide documentation of your income and information about the number of people in your family or household. The exact documentation needed can vary, so it is a good idea to ask what you should bring or submit when applying.
Does a sliding fee discount mean my visit will be free?
Not necessarily. Depending on your income, family size, the services you receive, and the health center’s sliding fee schedule, you may still be responsible for a portion of the cost.
Some qualifying patients may have only a small charge for certain services, while others may receive a partial discount.
The important thing to remember is that the program is designed to reduce financial barriers to healthcare based on a patient’s ability to pay.
Will I receive different care if I use the sliding fee program?
No. Qualifying for financial assistance does not mean you receive a different level of care.
The sliding fee program changes how eligible healthcare charges are calculated. It does not change the importance of your health needs or the quality of care you should expect to receive.
At Compassion Health Care, our goal is to help connect patients with the care they need while making healthcare as accessible as possible.
